Quick break now before part two
Chris Chapman kicks off part 2. And looks at pay. He asks, what is fair renumeration?
Gavin Birchall, superintendent pharmacist, MedicX Pharmacy
says it is a three part process
Chris Perrington, superintendent pharmacist, Sainsbury’s
says £25 is not insignificant and that there are peripheral benefits and the payment is fair
Alastair asked where will NMS lead us. He says it could lead to an essential service and could be used as a cue to intervention that include MURs
He would like to share work load of long-term conditions with GPs and secondary care
He says overall though it is not just about driving the numbers, but getting the service right and demonstrating the value of the service to the patient
Chris asks Ravi: Is this the way you see pharmacy moving?
He says absolutely. Especially as services are being culled. He says there is a need to demonstrate the benefit
Jennifer Richardson brings the topic back to the fee and questions Alastair on why it is less than MURs
He says, the average time for an NMS intervention is less than an MUR
He says for the majority of patients the NMS should be a short intervention
Chris talks prescription volumes with Mimi and asks whther there could be a two tier level of service
Mimi Lau says they have asked their members to not just look at the numbers
Renumeration for volume is the reality. Alastair Buxton says it is not capped though. Jennifer Richardson says that because of the banding some pharmacists see it as unfair
Gavin Birchall, superintendent pharmacist, MedicX Pharmacy
says it is complicated by the need for completion of NMS's
Gavin Birchall, superintendent pharmacist, MedicX Pharmacy
says high volume phamacies might be more pushed to deliver NMS because of how busty they are
He says it is about local delivery and looking at howit is delivered in different places.
Jennifer asks Garry Michaels, pharmacist, The Health Pharmacy, Bushey Heath
what he thinks of the banding. He says it is not about looking at the numbers but about it being part of the professional service a pharmacist should deliver
HE questions whether it could end up being a lot of effort for nothing
Michael Cann is asking a moral question: What happens if you surpass expectations do yo hold short if you aren't going to shift bands?
He is asked if Actavis would give its drugs away because of patient benefit? Touché
Alastair Buxton says it is abit like having excellent after-sales service, which no toher part of the NHS offers
It consent is about the NHS checking up on pharmacists not patients
Gary asks Chris and Gavin about whether they like the idea of banding instead of a cap like MURs
Chris says the anger is if there is a time when few new medicines are prescribed
